Cituoju:
I have recently bought a 405 GL 1.6 saloon, it has a high mileage 126,000 but runs well & looks as if it has been well looked after. The only major problem I have found is that when the car is warmed up 15 -20 mins the gearbox seems to stiffen up & gear changing requires quite a bit of force. Is this a problem with 405's or is it due to the high mileage?

This is a problem which I have encountered at least four times. It is particularly a problem with Citroen BXs, which are basically the same as Peugeots in this respect. What happens is that over the years the clutch pedal gradually sinks nearer and nearer to the floor, and the gearchange gets stiff because the clutch is not disengaging properly. The key to diagnosing this is that reverse becomes difficult to engage. If engaging reverse results in a pronounced crunch, then the clutch mechanism needs to be checked out. If reverse can be engaged easily and without noise, then the clutch is OK and the gearbox needs the attention.
At this point many mechanics will tell the poor owner that a new clutch is required, £200 please. It's total rubbish.
This is what you have to do:-
a) Check the bellcrank lever on top of the gearbox, you have to remove the air filter to get at it. They often crack, especially on Citroens. A new one costs about £15-£20. In the case of Citroen you will find that the new one is a lot stronger looking as they changed the design, which kind of proves the point.

Patikrinti sverta esanti ant begiu dezes virsaus, reikia istraukti oro filtra, kad prieitum. Jie daznai luzta, ypac Citroenuose. Naujas kainuoja 15-20 svaru.
While you're there, if the clutch is at-all stiff then remove the bell-crank, oil/grease the pivot and put it back, that often improves things.

c) The clutch cable stretches, and / or the actual mechanism inside the bell housing wears. This is unusual compared to other (lesser) makes of car, and therefore confuses less experienced / mentally endowed mechanics. With most inferior manufacturers the clutch plate wears, becoming thinner and thinner, as it does the clutch pedal gets higher and higher, and the mechanic will rightly say "new clutch mate, £200". With Peugeot's the clutch plate appears to be made of some kind of indestructible material which doesn't wear; my 305 has had the same clutch plate for 160,000 miles and the pedal hasn't risen 1mm. Because the clutch is so good, you notice the cable stretching and the mechanism wearing, which makes the pedal go down. Basically, you need to adjust the clutch, it takes a few minutes. Where the cable pulls on the bellcrank it has a threaded section with two nuts (one locks the other). Loosen the smaller one, and then wind the larger one up the thread and note the clutch pedal getting higher. Wind it up until you like the feel of it, but not so high that the pedal is jammed up against its end stop. You should be able to lift the pedal higher than its rest position, i.e. some free play. When it's right then do up the smaller nut to lock against the big one - that's it. Send me a cheque for the £200 pounds you just saved if you like!

With reference to the gearbox, if they have too much oil, or the wrong grade then they can become stiff. However Peugeot changed the gearbox oil grade from 15w40 to 75w80 (I think) in 1988 or so; but they did not alter the components inside the gearbox. What they did was to change the service interval. With the 15w40 you were supposed to change it every 48,000 miles, with the later gearbox specific oil they did not specify a change interval, I guess it lasts longer. Therefore putting the later oil in an early gearbox should not cause a problem. The early (before 1988) gearboxes do not have a level plug. The only way to get the level right is to totally drain the 'box and refill it with 1.8 litres. To further complicate things some of them have two drain plugs (see 305 Haynes manual). Therefore it is quite possible that the oil level is wrong. Any car after 1988 should have the later oil and the level filler plug which makes things a lot easier. Failing that bung some molyslip in the gearbox, it improved the gearchange on my car quite well.

Del vertimo tikslumo nepykit ;)
As tai pas tevuka garaze pats pedala pasikeliau.
